Cartier serial number checker

Classify common caseback formats and avoid unsafe year guesses without model-specific context.

Era onlyOptional photo OCR
Check your serial number
Spaces, dots, and dashes are fine. Manual checks run in your browser. Photo reads log your IP and usage to enforce daily limits; photos are not stored.

Example: AB94512

Read code from a product photo

JPEG, PNG, WebP, or GIF, up to 10 MiB. AuthenticityHouse forwards the photo to its OCR provider and does not store it.

Reference only—not an authenticity verdict
A plausible date code can appear on a counterfeit, and an unusual or unreadable code does not by itself make an item counterfeit. Use the result as one clue alongside construction, materials, provenance, and expert review.

How the Cartier rule works

Cartier has used several model-specific case and serial layouts. No single public formula safely converts every engraved identifier into a production year.

Read it in three passes
Follow the positions in order before interpreting the result.
  1. 1

Photograph the complete caseback and keep each engraved line separate.

  2. 2

Distinguish a model or case reference from the longer individual serial.

  3. 3

Classify the format, then use Cartier Care or service records for an individual date instead of guessing from two digits.

Where to look

Read the complete caseback engraving and compare it with the paperwork when available.

Know the limit

A pair of apparent year digits is meaningful only for a documented model-specific convention; this checker does not apply it globally.

These rules explain documented marking patterns. They do not prove that an item is authentic.

Cartier codes, era by era

Cartier caseback markings identify a watch, but there is no universal public formula that converts every serial into a year. Model references, individual serials, and service registration numbers must be classified before any date inference.

01Compiled reference

Formats by broad era

Cartier has used multiple overlapping layouts. The same pair of digits can play different roles on different models.

Why two apparent year digits are not enough

Some specialist guides document model-specific cases where a pair of digits corresponds to a year. Applying that shortcut globally creates false dates.

  • AB94512 should be classified as a legacy alphanumeric format, not automatically dated to 1994.
  • A century cannot be chosen from the serial alone when the watch family and production era are unknown.
  • A four-digit case reference and a longer individual serial can appear on the same watch; record both separately.

Use the official registration and service path

Cartier Care can accept a watch's engraved identifiers for registration. Service documentation and archives are stronger dating evidence than an open-web decoder.

  • Photograph the complete caseback rather than transcribing one isolated line.
  • Keep the model reference, individual serial, and any paperwork numbers in separate fields.
  • If the engraving is faint or the case must be opened, use an authorized or qualified watch professional.

Sources and method

Brand and archive material is preferred where it exists. Public decoding tables are identified as compiled references or observed patterns so their uncertainty stays visible.
