What Is a Louis Vuitton Date Code?

A Louis Vuitton date code is a combination of numbers and, on many items, letters that provides information about when and where an item was manufactured.

You may also hear these markings called a Louis Vuitton serial number, LV serial code, or Louis Vuitton authenticity code. However, a date code is not a unique serial number. Multiple authentic items may share the same code because it identifies a production period and factory rather than one individual bag.

Date codes are useful when examining an item, but they should only be considered one part of the authentication process.

How to Read a Louis Vuitton Date Code

Louis Vuitton changed its date code system several times. The correct decoding method depends on when the item was manufactured.

Early 1980s

Many items used three or four numbers. The first two digits generally represented the production year, while the remaining digit or digits represented the month.

842

Can indicate February 1984

Mid to Late 1980s

Louis Vuitton later added letters that generally identify the manufacturing location, while the numbers indicate the production date. Because formats evolved during this period, vintage items should be evaluated carefully rather than by code alone.

1990 to 2006

The common format was two letters followed by four numbers. The letters identify the manufacturing location. The first and third digits represent the month; the second and fourth represent the year.

VI1025

Two factory letters + four date digits

2007 to Early 2021

The format remained two letters and four numbers, but the numbers changed from month and year to week and year. The first and third digits represent the production week; the second and fourth represent the year.

CA4220

Can indicate week 42 of 2020

Applying the older month-and-year method to a newer item can produce an incorrect result.

Do Louis Vuitton Bags Still Have Date Codes?

Newer items may not have a traditional visible date code. Louis Vuitton phased out the traditional system around 2021 and transitioned to embedded electronic identification technology.

If a newer bag has no visible date code, that alone does not mean it is counterfeit. Likewise, the presence of a date code does not automatically mean an item is authentic.

Where Is the Louis Vuitton Date Code Located?

Date codes are usually placed discreetly inside an item. Depending on the model and production year, check:

  • Inside an interior pocket
  • On a leather tab inside the bag
  • Along an interior seam
  • Under an interior flap
  • Near the top edge of an interior pocket
  • On or near an interior leather trim
  • On certain older items, underneath or near a strap attachment

The code may be heat-stamped into leather or another interior material, making older or heavily used markings difficult to read.

Can't Find Your Date Code?

Do not immediately assume the item is fake. Location varies by model and year, some vintage items use different markings, and newer products may not have a visible code. The Authenticity House App can guide you through photographing important areas for further evaluation.

Louis Vuitton Factory Codes

Letters in many Louis Vuitton date codes are associated with manufacturing locations. Products have historically been made in France, Italy, Spain, the United States, Germany, and Switzerland.

Factory letters should be evaluated alongside the item's Made in marking and other characteristics. A factory code that appears valid by itself is not proof of authenticity.

Does a Valid Date Code Mean My Bag Is Real?

No.

A counterfeit bag can contain a correctly formatted date code, a real factory code, a plausible production date, or a code copied from an authentic item. An LV date code checker should never be the only authentication method. Professional authentication considers many characteristics together.

How to Check if a Louis Vuitton Bag Is Authentic

A date code is only one piece of the puzzle. Other characteristics may include:

  1. 1. Date code

Check whether the format, production period, and manufacturing location make sense for the item.

  2. 2. Logo and heat stamp

Examine the Louis Vuitton logo, typography, letter spacing, embossing, positioning, and overall quality.

  3. 3. Materials

Authenticators may examine canvas, leather, lining, texture, construction, and how materials change with age.

  4. 4. Stitching

Look at stitch consistency, spacing, alignment, thread, construction, and workmanship.

  5. 5. Hardware

Zippers, clasps, rivets, engravings, finishes, shapes, and other hardware details can provide important authentication clues.

  6. 6. Monogram and pattern alignment

Pattern positioning and construction should be evaluated according to the particular Louis Vuitton model.

  7. 7. Interior details

Labels, pockets, lining, stamps, manufacturing details, and construction techniques can provide additional information.

Because counterfeit products continue to improve, authentication should consider the entire item rather than one feature alone.

Date Code Checker vs. Authentication

Date Code Check

Helps estimate when and where an item may have been made and whether its code follows a known format.

Louis Vuitton Authentication

Asks whether the whole item is authentic by examining multiple product characteristics rather than one code.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I check a Louis Vuitton serial number online?

Louis Vuitton's traditional date codes are sometimes called serial numbers, but they are not unique serial numbers for individual bags. You can use the Authenticity House LV Date Code Checker to decode supported date codes and obtain information about their production period and manufacturing location.

Is the Louis Vuitton date code the same as a serial number?

No. A Louis Vuitton date code generally identifies production information rather than uniquely identifying an individual item.

Can two Louis Vuitton bags have the same date code?

Yes. Because date codes are not unique identifiers, more than one Louis Vuitton item can share the same date code.

Does every Louis Vuitton bag have a date code?

No. Older vintage items may use different coding systems or have no code, and newer Louis Vuitton items generally do not use the traditional visible date code system.

When did Louis Vuitton stop using date codes?

Louis Vuitton transitioned away from traditional visible date codes around 2021 in favor of embedded electronic identification technology.

Is a Louis Vuitton bag fake if it has no date code?

Not necessarily. A missing date code alone does not prove that an item is counterfeit. The item's age, model, construction, repairs, and production period should all be considered.

Can a fake Louis Vuitton have a real date code?

Yes. Counterfeiters can reproduce or copy valid-looking date codes. This is why a date code alone cannot authenticate a Louis Vuitton item.
